Can Blogs Influence Big Media?

Today is Nov. 8th and I'm just getting my issue of PRWeek dated Oct. 31st.  Try as I might I just can't figure out why there is a one week delay in receiving this particular publication.  At any rate, I skimmed the pub (since I read most of last weeks articles online - great improvement to the website) and became intrigued by the "PR Play of the Week" entitled 'Leaker' firing leaves Conde Nast all wet.  Basically the story is about the firing of Andrew Kickoff, a freelancer for Conde Nast who forwarded an internal email to his friends at Gawker.com announcing that the company's server was down.  Andrew said he shared the note only to let them know why he wasn't on IM since he was working with them on some research.  Gawker posted the memo, and the rest is history.

Gawker did feel badly about the incident and then blasted Conde Nast for its decision, swearing revenge by inviting anyone within the organization to share every internal memo they could find (strongly suggesting personal email addresses, of course).

Gawker.com is currently listed as number 15 on technorati's most popular blog sites. Which begs the question, can an influential blog impact a big media player?  and when will traditional media embrace new media? On a 5 point scale, 1 being clueless and 5 being ingenious, PRWeek ranked this PR Play as a:

2- Ill-advised

I have to agree.
