Using Blogs for Internal Communications
The New Communications Forum Blogzine has really improved the look and feel as well as the content over the last several months. I'm excited to see what Jennifer has in store for us in 2006. This months issue includes a great example of setting up a temporary CEO blog for pr and internal communication from Steve Crescenszo called Hit-and-run blogging. The idea: Have the CEO provide employees with a running commentary from an important business trip, mixing his personal insights with news on the discussions. "A good idea, but of course, you have to get the CEO on board, first. And surprisingly, that wasn’t a problem." What a great way to boost moral and allow employees to be included in what is typically a very closed experience. Of course, this is nothing new, just a new tool or form of communication to connect with employees.
Thinking back to 2000, I was fortunate (or unfortunately depending on how you slice it) to have traveled with the senior executive team on a three week roadshow as we attempted to bring yet another Internet consulting company public (ah yes, the good ole days right before the bubble). It was an experience I'll never forget, traveling from country to country, city to city by trains (first class), planes (the Concord!) and automobiles (limos, Mercedes, jags, you name it). Yet with all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the roadshow, it was still important that the employees stayed involved and updated, since they were the ones who got us to that point. We wanted to figure out a way to include all employees in life on the road and bring the experience back to them. We started to keep a roadshow diary with photos and all. We sent daily emails and updates back to the office to be distributed by the communications team.
Today, I have no record of that trip.
