Blog Bits - Week of May 30th

Constantin Basturea’s blog, PR Meets the WWW took an interesting and closer look at the preference for full-text RSS feeds.  In his opinion, “most aggregators offer the feature of showing only headlines….if you have a full-text RSS feed, any reader can choose to see only the headlines….it doesn’t work the other way around”.  Another point Basturea made was that he found it a pain to “click to read more” because it interrupted the flow of scanning postings and it took extra time and attention - especially for Bloggers reading hundreds of blogs each day.

In mentioning the International Brand Design Conference, the Strategic Public Relations blog posted an extremely addicting brand alphabet test called the Retail Alphabet Game.  Sadly, I can only figure out 7 of the 26 brands, but the real point is - think about how powerful your brand has to be in order for consumers to recognize it by one simple letter.  Incidentally, the J is driving me crazy (I know I’ve seen it somewhere before) if anyone can help me out with that one.

Robin Good offers his advice in “How To Write Great Titles And Headlines For The Web”.  Good argues that it is a completely different ballgame from creating titles in traditional media such as newspapers and magazines. He includes several tips including:

1.  Make an effort to keep your title short

2.  Do not try to make the title "smart"

3.  The title must be a "label" or summary of the content

4.  Headlines have to stand on their own

5.  Is the title representative of what a typical or potential reader of your content would write to search for content like the content you have in your article?

6.  Strike at the start

7.  Proper names, products, brands and services names go last
